Recently signed by the Philadelphia Flyers, 22-year-old center Karsen Dorwart participated in his first full NHL practice on Wednesday. The former Michigan State player discussed with the media the opportunity to prove himself at the highest level of the sport.

"It's very special. It's kind of been a quick few days but everyone's been great. They've made the transition (to the NHL daily routine) really easy, so I'm just looking forward to playing," said Dorwart.

Dorwart was a sought-after undrafted player in the NCAA this season. He was second on Michigan State in points, with 31 in 35 games, including 13 goals and 18 assists. Last season, he scored 15 goals and 35 points in 38 games.

"I did have some other options," Dorwart acknowledged. "But I just think the interest from the brass, Jonesy [Keith Jones] and [Danny] Briere, they were unbelievable with me all year in showing interest."

Recent trades involving Morgan Frost and Scott Laughton influenced Dorwart's decision to sign with the Flyers. He sees an opportunity to compete for an NHL position in training camp next September.

"There's an opportunity up the middle for a spot at center. That's exciting. Obviously, you've got to work for everything you're going to get, but it reminded me of when I first got to MSU," Dorwart said.

The Flyers are set to play in Montreal on Saturday, followed by a game in Manhattan against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden on April 9. Dorwart expects to make his NHL debut in one of these games.

"I've never been to Montreal before, but MSG would be special, too. Anywhere you do it, it's a dream come true. I'm just very fortunate and blessed to be in the position I am," Dorwart added.

Apart from being a solid offensive producer, Dorwart is known for being an intelligent and responsible player. He aims to be a versatile forward trusted in different game situations.

"I think I'm responsible at both ends of the ice, and play a complete game," he said.

Flyers interim head coach Brad Shaw observed Dorwart's play at Michigan State before practice to understand his style. Shaw noted that while it's difficult to predict how quickly a player will adapt, the Flyers' reports on Dorwart's potential and work ethic were positive.

The most recent college free agent to make an impact with the Flyers was Matt Read in the 2011-12 season. Other players like Mike Vecchione and Jackson Cates had a few NHL games after their college careers.
