Edmundo Sosa once again played a pivotal role for the Philadelphia Phillies during their home opener against the Rockies. The Phillies emerged victorious with a 6-1 win at Citizens Bank Park. Sosa, who started as shortstop due to Trea Turner's absence because of back spasms, contributed significantly to the team's success.
After hitting a double earlier in the game, Sosa found himself at bat in a crucial seventh-inning situation. With runners on first and second, he faced Rockies pitcher Victor Vodnik. Phillies manager Rob Thomson opted to keep Sosa in the game instead of pinch-hitting. "He's in the game," Thomson said. "Vodnik's not a real traditional guy, he's pretty even [splits]. And Sosa's been swinging the bat well, so I decided to stay with him."
Sosa delivered once more, doubling to right-center field and driving in two runs to give the Phillies a 2-1 lead. This marked the third consecutive game in which Sosa had multiple hits. "I’m always preparing myself," Sosa said. "I think I’m going to be on the field playing when I go to the gym."
Kyle Schwarber extended the Phillies' lead with a two-run home run, followed by back-to-back home runs from Max Kepler and Nick Castellanos in the eighth inning. The Phillies have now won three of their last four games.
Trevor Turner, who had been sidelined, pinch-hit for Brandon Marsh in the seventh inning and expressed optimism about returning to the field. "I felt great after fielding ground balls before Monday’s game," Turner said.
Sosa, reflecting on his journey with the Phillies, expressed gratitude for the opportunities he's received since joining the team in a trade from St. Louis in July 2022. "The Phillies just embraced me," he said. "They treated me like a superstar from the first day."
As the Phillies continue their season, Sosa remains ready for any role needed. "I'm focused here. And I'm working every day here. That's all I'm thinking about as of right now," Sosa added.
