The Philadelphia Flyers concluded their five-game road trip with a 7-2 defeat against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena on Tuesday. The Flyers ended the trip without a win, going 0-4-1, and have a record of 1-10-1 over their last 12 games.
Initially, the Flyers started well in the first period but struggled as the game progressed. At 3:17 of the first period, there was a scrum along the boards resulting in offsetting minor penalties for Calle Jarnkrok (boarding) and Nick Seeler (roughing), leading to two minutes of 4-on-4 play.
Philadelphia had an early power play opportunity at 5:34 when Nick Robertson was penalized for tripping. During this advantage, Owen Tippett managed one shot for the Flyers.
Returning to even strength, Ryan Poehling scored his eighth goal of the season from a pass by Jakob Pelletier, assisted by Rodrigo Abols. However, John Tavares equalized at 10:37 following a defensive zone faceoff won by Noah Cates.
A disjointed line change led to too many players on ice for Philadelphia at 13:57, with Matvei Michkov serving the penalty. William Nylander scored on this power play after his attempted backdoor pass deflected off Seeler's skate into the net. Matthew Knies and Auston Matthews were credited with assists.
Toronto dominated shots on goal in the first period with a count of 10-3. Bobby McMann extended Toronto's lead to 3-1 at 5:11 of the second period with an assist from Nylander.
Despite Sean Couturier nearly closing the gap to one goal shortly after McMann's score, he hit the post. Tavares added another goal for Toronto at 7:49 following another casual line change by Philadelphia.
By midway through the second period, Toronto led in shots on goal with an advantage of 18-6. Cam York remained benched after Tavares' earlier goal in that period.
Nylander further increased Toronto's lead to 5-1 at 11:55 with assists from Tavares and McMann. David Kampf later scored through Samuel Ersson’s legs for a sixth Toronto goal.
Couturier finally got on board for Philadelphia at reducing their deficit to four goals thanks to assists from Jamie Drysdale and Michkov. However, Max Domi restored Toronto's five-goal lead late in regulation time.
Ersson faced significant pressure throughout, making saves on only 23 out of 30 shots faced while former Flyer Anthony Stolarz stopped all but two out of nineteen attempts from Philadelphia during third-period action which saw eight total shots come towards him alone
Head coach John Tortorella unsuccessfully challenged goaltender interference during Morgan Rielly’s would-be tally following initial contact made between Mitch Marner & Emil Andrae within blue paint vicinity
