The Philadelphia Phillies have decided to promote Justin Crawford, their No. 3 prospect, to Triple-A Lehigh Valley at the start of the season. Despite being only 21 years old and having limited experience beyond High-A Jersey Shore, Crawford's impressive performance in the Phillies' system and during spring training has led to this decision.

Luke Murton, the Phillies' player development director, commented on Crawford's potential growth in Triple-A: "I think there’s going to be a learning curve for him in Triple-A, but I think he’ll go up there and play well." Murton emphasized that this move is intended to prepare Crawford for a future role with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Crawford was selected as the 17th overall pick in the 2022 Draft. Over three seasons, he has achieved a .316/.371/.442 slash line in 953 plate appearances and stolen 99 bases while excelling defensively in center field. His recent performance in eight Grapefruit League games included going 4-for-11 (.364) with two stolen bases.

Murton praised Crawford's dedication: "He’s done everything we’ve asked him to do," noting his talent and competitiveness. Concerns about Crawford's high ground-ball percentage were addressed by acknowledging his speed advantage.

If Crawford performs well at Triple-A, he may earn a promotion before season's end. Current Phillies center fielders Brandon Marsh and Johan Rojas will also be closely monitored. Murton highlighted the importance of development over starting position: “We tell guys all the time, it doesn’t matter where you start, it matters where you finish.”
