Edmundo Sosa made a return to center field during the Phillies' 1-0 loss to the Tigers in a Grapefruit League game at Publix Field. This marked his first appearance in that position since April 2023, when he had borrowed Kyle Schwarber's glove. Now equipped with his own glove, Sosa is part of an experiment by the Phillies to optimize their bench lineup.
“I have it ready to play,” Sosa commented through the team’s interpreter.
The team is evaluating its options for the four-man bench. Rafael Marchán and Garrett Stubbs are vying for the backup catcher role, while Johan Rojas is considered a strong candidate for the fourth outfielder position. Manager Rob Thomson emphasized that Rojas must prove himself to secure his spot.
If Rojas joins the team, Kody Clemens and Buddy Kennedy are leading contenders for another bench position. Both players can cover infield and outfield positions and lack Minor League options, which influences their candidacy. Cal Stevenson remains another option but has an available option remaining.
Sosa's ability to play outfield could provide flexibility against left-handed pitchers by resting Max Kepler or Brandon Marsh, potentially allowing more opportunities for Clemens and Kennedy or others in camp.
“He’s getting better,” said Thomson regarding Sosa's performance as an outfielder.
Sosa expressed confidence about playing outfield during regular games: “Yeah, I could do it.”
He views contributing to the lineup as a privilege: “We have a lot of good players on the Phillies... Being here feels like a dream.”
In pitching news, Aaron Nola delivered two scoreless innings against the Tigers in his Grapefruit League debut. He focused on refining his fastball command and changeup without using his signature curveball.
“Almost got hit in the head -- which [it] was nice it didn't hit me,” Nola noted after facing Colt Keith's line drive.
Nola aims for consistency with his changeup this season: “Every year, I try to sharpen that pitch... like try to get it to sharpen before the season starts and have it all season.”
