The Philadelphia Phillies made significant moves in the offseason to strengthen their pitching rotation, notably acquiring Jesús Luzardo from the Miami Marlins. The trade involved sending prospects Starlyn Caba and Emaarion Boyd to Miami. This acquisition followed an unsuccessful attempt by the Phillies last summer to obtain Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox, despite offering top prospects Aidan Miller and Justin Crawford.

Luzardo's performance during Friday afternoon's Grapefruit League game against the Boston Red Sox demonstrated his potential value to the Phillies' rotation. He pitched two scoreless innings, retiring all six batters he faced, contributing to a 7-5 victory for Philadelphia. His fastball reached speeds of up to 97.7 mph, with an average velocity matching his 2023 performance when he recorded a 10-10 win-loss record with a 3.58 ERA in 32 starts.

Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto expressed optimism about Luzardo's role in the team's rotation alongside pitchers Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Ranger Suárez, and Cristopher Sánchez. "I feel like we have a No. 1 and maybe four No. 2s," Realmuto stated.

Luzardo is experimenting with new pitches this season, including a slider with more horizontal break that could serve as a new weapon in his arsenal. "We’re exploring other avenues of getting guys out," Luzardo explained.

Reflecting on his first outing since recovering from a back injury sustained last year, Luzardo said, "I just wanted to come out, throw good, healthy." Despite having missed most of last season due to injury, he expressed confidence in his readiness for the upcoming year: "It definitely feels like I’m back and healthy."

Looking ahead, there are discussions within the team about managing Luzardo’s workload through careful monitoring of innings and pitch counts or possibly integrating prospect Andrew Painter into a six-man rotation later this summer.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson praised Luzardo's demeanor on the mound: "He’s kind of quiet, unassuming... But when he gets on the mound, he gets after it."
