A significant milestone was reached on Saturday night as Homegrown defender Frankie Westfield made his debut for the Philadelphia Union in their 4-2 victory against Orlando City. The 19-year-old, who has been with the organization since joining the junior academy at nine, played 88 minutes and contributed significantly to the win.
Westfield recorded three blocks and five clearances, and also assisted Tai Baribo for the team's fourth goal. Reflecting on his debut, Westfield expressed gratitude: “I’m truly blessed. I just want to thank God for giving me this opportunity and blessing to step on this field today. I want to thank Coach Bradley, for the trust he's given me throughout preseason and especially today.”
The match marked a new era for the Union under coach Bradley Carnell's leadership, with Westfield being one of four players making their debut. Carnell had confidence in Westfield's readiness following a training stint in Marbella, Spain. "He's just shown commitment to the process," Carnell said. "I'm happy Frankie, he gets himself an assist as well."
After the game, Carnell initiated a new tradition by awarding Westfield a game ball in front of supportive teammates. Westfield expressed his appreciation: “This means everything... First start, first win of many, and I’m excited for the rest of the season.”
