Pennsylvania House Republicans gathered on Wednesday to discuss legislative measures aimed at addressing illegal immigration within the state. The press conference, held in Harrisburg, was convened amidst ongoing criticism of the Biden administration's handling of border security.

Pennsylvania House Republican Leader Bryan Cutler expressed concerns over sanctuary cities and counties, stating, "Every time you create a sanctuary city or county, you are literally moving the national border to your own neighborhood. And when the government picks and chooses which laws are important, they invite the people that live under their watch to do the same. This must stop." He emphasized the commitment of House Republicans to address illegal immigration issues where he believes federal efforts have fallen short.

Rep. Martina White proposed legislation mandating a minimum $1 million bail for individuals accused of assaulting law enforcement officers. This measure is a response to incidents involving illegal immigrants attacking police officers earlier this year. White stated, "My legislation to set a minimum $1 million bail for assaulting a police officer sends a clear message: Pennsylvania stands firmly against violence toward those who protect and serve our communities."

Additionally, Rep. Mike Cabell introduced a resolution urging Congress and federal authorities to monitor so-called "ghost flights" that transport undocumented immigrants into the U.S. Cabell called for collaboration between federal and local entities to ensure safe implementation of immigration policies. He warned that unchecked ghost flights could lead to humanitarian issues in Pennsylvania.

Rep. Donna Scheuren highlighted her upcoming bill focused on dealing with squatters and ensuring cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement if squatters are found to be undocumented immigrants. She stated, "For too long in Pennsylvania, we have protected criminal squatters over the rights of property owners."

Rep. Ryan Warner discussed his legislative proposal aimed at banning sanctuary municipalities in Pennsylvania using state preemption authority. Warner noted that his efforts have already influenced some counties to reconsider their sanctuary status and encouraged others to follow suit.

Republican legislators aim for these measures as part of broader actions intended to address what they see as gaps left by current federal immigration policies.
