Philadelphia Union has announced the signing of defender Frankie Westfield as a Homegrown player. The contract extends through 2028, with an option for 2029. Westfield, who served as co-captain for Philadelphia Union II last season, is also a U.S. Youth National Team player and becomes the 27th Homegrown player for the Union.
"Frankie is a talented and versatile young defender," stated Ernst Tanner, Sporting Director of Philadelphia Union. "His ability to use both feet effectively allows him to impact the game on both sides of the field, and his role as Union II’s vice-captain last season makes us confident in his maturity and leadership potential on and off the field. We’re excited to see the contribution he’ll bring to the first team."
Westfield, at age 19, joined the Union Academy in 2021 and became one of their standout players. As vice-captain in 2024, he played all 26 matches, accumulating over 2,300 minutes on the field. His six goals set a new record for most goals by a defender in Union II history. These performances earned him recognition in the MLS NEXT Pro Best XI and helped lead Union II to their first MLS NEXT Pro Cup during a remarkable season.
Internationally, Westfield was called up to represent the U.S. Under-20 Men’s Youth National Team for a training camp held in Chile in October 2024. He participated in two matches against Chile's U20 team during this period.
