Darius "Big Play" Slay, a second-round pick in the 2013 NFL draft, continues to make an impact in his 12th year in the league. With a resume that includes six Pro Bowl selections and being named first-team All-Pro, Slay is preparing for the future by mentoring rookies Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell.
"It's a natural thing. I'm a natural dude, so I like to always involve myself around the young guys, definitely in my position," Slay said. He emphasizes building bonds with teammates and shares his experience with them. Despite being one of the oldest players on the team, alongside Lane Johnson and behind Brandon Graham, Slay feels rejuvenated by his younger teammates.
Slay has been successful this season with 13 pass deflections and notable performances such as Week 16 against Washington. His leadership extends beyond his on-field performance; he credits his teammates for their support. "(I'm) just trusting myself and trusting what I know, and I'm playing ball... Without those guys, I wouldn't be too much," he stated after a game.
His influence is appreciated by rookies DeJean and Mitchell. "He's helped us every step of the way," DeJean said. Mitchell added that Slay acts as a mentor both on and off the field: "He's been like a big brother."
Slay's presence energizes the team each Sunday as they aim for success in the playoffs. The veteran cornerback hopes to add a Super Bowl win to his career achievements.
"Just continue to keep leading... hopefully a ring," Slay remarked ahead of the 2024 season.
As Philadelphia enters playoff mode, Slay's guidance will be crucial. "It's just a regular game... But it's win or go home," Mitchell concluded.
