On Thursday, Philadelphia Union announced that Bradley Carnell had joined the club as its fourth-ever head coach. To introduce him to fans, Carnell participated in a Q&A session, sharing insights about his personal and professional life.
Carnell hails from Johannesburg, South Africa. When asked about his new role with the Union, he expressed enthusiasm for working with talented individuals: "Just excited to work with good people and great players. People is the core of my philosophy, so I'm excited to work with them."
He shared that his favorite aspect of coaching is being on the field daily: "Working with players when there's feelings, emotions, passion, technical abilities. Just doing everything that I'm here on this earth to do."
Carnell reflected on his soccer career highlights, citing his debut at age 16 in South Africa and participating in the World Cup 2002 in Japan/Korea as memorable moments.
When asked who he looks up to, Carnell mentioned his father: "He's probably the one who grounded me with values and rights and wrongs from an early age."
Regarding personal preferences, Carnell enjoys a barbecue snack and was once fond of Craig David's song "7 Days." He humorously speculated that if he could choose any superpower it would be to "extend longevity," adding that he'd like more time on Earth.
For an actor portrayal in a movie about his life, he chose Leonardo DiCaprio. If not coaching, he might consider being a barista or race car driver due to his interest in caffeine and octane.
Addressing Union fans directly, Carnell said he's looking forward to 2025: "Presenting ourselves not as a new squad but as a reinvigorated squad here at home at Subaru Park...I'm really excited about spending this time with you."
