The Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly set to sign outfielder Max Kepler on a one-year, $10 million contract, pending a physical examination. The agreement has not yet been confirmed by the team. Kepler, who spent his entire 10-year career with the Minnesota Twins, is aiming for a comeback after an injury-ridden 2024 season.

Kepler, 31, faced challenges last year due to patellar tendinitis in his left knee and hip issues. Despite these setbacks, he achieved a .682 OPS over 399 plate appearances in his final season with the Twins. Historically, when healthy, Kepler has demonstrated strong performance metrics including a .770 OPS and 110 OPS+ from 2019-23 with Minnesota.

In 2023 alone, he recorded a batting line of .260/.332/.484 with 24 home runs and 66 RBIs across 491 plate appearances. His career peak came in 2019 when he hit 36 homers and drove in 90 runs.

The Phillies have been actively seeking to bolster their outfield since non-tendering Austin Hays in November. Kepler's disciplined approach at the plate may benefit the team's lineup known for its tendency to chase pitches outside the strike zone. From 2019-23, Kepler ranked notably low among major league players in chase rate at just over 25%.

Defensively versatile, Kepler could slot into left field alongside Nick Castellanos or remain as one of baseball’s top right field defenders—a position where he leads MLB right fielders from 2016-24 with an impressive tally of Outs Above Average.
