Jordan Romano's recent experience at Citizens Bank Park left a lasting impression on him. During a game between the Blue Jays and the Phillies, Romano pitched the ninth inning in front of over 34,000 fans. Reflecting on that day, he said, "The atmosphere, I mean, just electric." He expressed his admiration for Philadelphia's high standards and expectations for performance.

On Monday, the Phillies signed Romano to a one-year contract worth $8.5 million with incentives. Toronto had non-tendered Romano after he missed most of the season due to an elbow injury. However, following surgery in July, he is back pitching in the mid-90s. The Phillies believe he will be an asset in their bullpen next year.

Romano sees this as an opportunity to prove himself again and potentially secure a multiyear deal next offseason. "Obviously, last year was a really disappointing and frustrating season for me," he stated. "This year, I want to get back on track."

Despite earning 95 saves with the Blue Jays from 2021-23, Romano has not been guaranteed a closer role with the Phillies but will pitch in late innings. His performance during Spring Training could earn him save opportunities come April.

The Phillies are counting on Romano to fill gaps left by departing free agents Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estévez. While they may seek additional bullpen support later, Romano is currently seen as a key addition.

Romano remains flexible about his role: "If they want [me] to throw the ninth...I’m happy to do it," he said. "But if they need me in other spots...I’m just there to help get big outs whenever they need them."
