Running back Saquon Barkley has set a new single-season rushing record for the Philadelphia Eagles. During Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers at Lincoln Financial Field, Barkley surpassed LeSean McCoy's 2013 record of 1,607 rushing yards with a 9-yard gain on his 17th carry.
"I think it's pretty cool, the most important thing was getting a win, and we got the win. Being a fan of Shady (LeSean McCoy) growing up and seeing the spectacular things he was able to do with the ball in his hands and to be able to mentioned with him definitely means a lot," Barkley said after the game. "Gotta give credit to the guys up front. They've made my job a lot easier so far this year. Hopefully, it will continue."
Barkley also achieved his ninth 100-yard performance this season, setting another franchise record. He now has 1,623 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns for the season. In Sunday's victory over the Panthers, which ended 22-16, Barkley recorded 124 yards on 20 carries.
"You want to come in here and leave a legacy. I'm aware of it, but that's not the driving factor of it," Barkley stated earlier this week. He had researched Eagles' greats like McCoy, Brian Westbrook, and Wilbert Montgomery before joining through free agency.
Barkley's initial touch during Sunday's game added six yards to his total for the season. On subsequent plays, he passed Montgomery's previous mark by gaining additional yardage.
"I never wrote the goal down to break it, but you're always aware of it," Barkley remarked about breaking records. "That's how I train and that's how I operate in the offseason and camp because I want to be great."
Despite setting new records, Barkley remains focused on future games: "It's all good. The records are great... Go home, smile... then watch film and get ready for the Steelers."
