Philadelphia police handled 40 rape cases over the last four weeks ending Dec. 1, according to the Philadelphia Police Department.

This represents a 9.1% decrease from the previous four-week period, which saw 44 rape cases.

So far this year, the city has reported a total of 499 rape cases.

Notably, the four-week period ending Nov. 17 marked the highest incidence of these crimes this year, with 57 cases, underscoring the need for heightened vigilance and community cooperation.

Philadelphia grappled with a staggering surge in property crimes in 2023. According to the annual Pew Charitable Trusts report, the city registered more than 78,000 property crimes, which pushed the total number of major crimes (violent and property combined) to a 20-year high of 93,009.

In contrast, violent crimes, encompassing assault, robbery, and homicide, saw a significant decline in 2023, reaching their lowest level in a decade.
