The Philadelphia Phillies have made several roster changes, as announced on Monday. These adjustments to the 40-man roster do not involve Juan Soto.
The team decided against making qualifying offers to free-agent right-handers Jeff Hoffman and Spencer Turnbull. The qualifying offer for this year stands at a one-year contract worth $21.05 million for 2025, which the Phillies deemed too high for a single reliever. Carlos Estévez, another right-hander who is now a free agent, was ineligible for a qualifying offer as he did not spend the entire season with the team.
While the Phillies expressed interest in retaining either Hoffman or Estévez, they acknowledged that keeping both is unlikely.
Several players cleared waivers and were outrighted, becoming free agents: right-handers Yunior Marte, Luis Ortiz, Freddy Tarnok; left-hander Kolby Allard; and infielder Rodolfo Castro.
In terms of additions, the Phillies acquired right-hander Devin Sweet from Detroit in exchange for cash considerations. They also claimed right-hander John McMillon off waivers from Miami and added right-hander Alan Rangel to their 40-man roster.
Following these transactions, the Phillies' 40-man roster currently holds 37 players.
Devin Sweet, aged 28, had a record of 9-6 with a 3.91 ERA over 52 appearances (including four starts) with Triple-A Toledo in 2024. He recorded 111 strikeouts and issued 38 walks across 76 innings. In seven appearances with Seattle and Oakland in 2023, Sweet posted a 10.38 ERA.
John McMillon, aged 26, achieved a 1.50 ERA over ten appearances with Miami before ending his season on the injured list due to right elbow tightness following his September outing where his fastball velocity dropped from an average of 95.4 mph to the high-80s range. In total, McMillon has struck out 21 batters while walking five over his career's initial fourteen big league appearances spanning sixteen innings.
Alan Rangel, aged 27, has spent nine years in Minor League Baseball and joined the Phillies' system last July. Over eleven appearances (six starts) between Triple-A Lehigh Valley and Single-A Clearwater this past season, Rangel posted a 4.02 ERA across thirty-one and one-third innings while striking out twenty-nine batters against eight walks.
