Fletcher Cox retires from NFL surrounded by supportive family

In 2012, Fletcher Cox's family traveled to New York City to witness his selection by the Eagles as the 12th overall pick in the NFL Draft. Twelve years later, at a press conference held at the NovaCare Complex in South Philadelphia, Cox announced his retirement from professional football. The event was attended by an even larger group of his family members.

The six-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle had previously announced his decision to retire on social media on March 10. During the press conference, he expressed gratitude towards teammates, coaches, front office staff, fans, and especially his family. "Mom, I love you," Cox said during the event. He credited her for much of his success and thanked her for supporting him throughout his career.

Cox grew up in Yazoo City, Mississippi with his mother Malissa and siblings Shaddrick (known as "Trell"), Nikki, and Fantasia. His brother Shaddrick played a significant role as a father figure and shared with Cox a passion for building race cars before passing away in 2015. To honor him, Cox has "Shaddrick" tattooed on his forearm.

Reflecting on their bond, Nikki emphasized the importance of staying connected despite geographical distance. She stated that maintaining their close relationship was crucial for their family dynamic.

Cox's girlfriend Kaycee Marchetti has been part of his life since shortly after he arrived in Philadelphia. They met days after the Eagles traded up to select him from Mississippi State and have been together since 2017. Marchetti highlighted how integral family is to Cox's life: "Besides football, his family is the biggest thing."

Malissa described Philadelphia as an ideal place for Cox: "It was an excellent outcome for our family." She expressed pride in both her son’s achievements and being associated with the Eagles.

As Cox enters retirement, he looks forward to being more involved in his nieces' and nephews' lives by attending their sporting events. Malissa noted that family remains paramount for her son: "His family is going to be there when no one else is there."

Fletcher Cox and those closest to him aspire that their next significant gathering will be at Canton, Ohio if he earns induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
