Special Teams Coordinator Michael Clay addressed reporters during the Eagles' offseason training program, emphasizing the importance of adapting to changes in special teams. This year, coordinators across the league are adjusting to a significant change—the new kickoff rule for the 2024 season. The rule, approved at the Annual League Meeting in Orlando, Florida, aims to enhance safety and revive the excitement of kickoff returns reminiscent of the early 2000s.

"The great thing about it is that 31 other teams are in the same boat," said Clay regarding this adjustment. He noted that while similar rules have been implemented in leagues like the XFL, there are still many nuances to consider as they adapt for NFL play.

Clay's team is focused on retraining veterans and integrating rookies under this new rule. During the 2024 NFL Draft, the Eagles selected three players with notable return experience: Cooper DeJean, Will Shipley, and Ainias Smith. Each brings unique skills to their roles as returners.

"They all excel in different areas," Clay commented on his new recruits. He praised DeJean's smooth running style and ball-tracking ability, Smith's explosiveness and dynamic playmaking, and Shipley's downhill running combined with agility.

Returning player Britain Covey will continue contributing after leading in punt return yards last season. Meanwhile, Clay is also preparing his kick coverage team for challenges posed by opposing returners under this new rule.

"We still got to be fundamentally sound when we are blocking because we do have a couple of good returners back there," Clay stated. "We have to use this new kickoff return as a weapon."

Beyond adapting to rule changes, Clay has been building his special teams unit during spring workouts. The addition of veteran players like Zach Baun and Oren Burks is expected to strengthen their lineup alongside returning contributors such as Josh Jobe and Sydney Brown.

"I lean on everybody," Clay remarked about utilizing diverse talent within his squad. His goal remains ensuring all players are prepared for their roles on special teams throughout training camp.
