After finalizing a trade with the Washington Commanders, the Philadelphia Eagles have chosen Cooper DeJean as their 40th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The deal involved an exchange of multiple picks between the two teams.
DeJean is now the second secondary player picked by the Eagles this year, following cornerback Quinyon Mitchell, who was selected with the 22nd pick in Round 1. Expressing his excitement about joining the Eagles, DeJean stated, "This is something you dream of as a little kid. I'm excited to bring my talents there, get in, get to work, learn from the vets that are there right now, and go win some football games."
Eagles Executive Vice President/General Manager Howie Roseman praised DeJean's athleticism and versatility: "The guy has every tool in his body. He's an elite athlete and elite competitor." Roseman highlighted DeJean's instincts and character as assets for the team.
Standing at six feet tall and weighing 203 pounds, DeJean is known for his ability to play various positions in defense. His college career at the University of Iowa showcased his skills with notable statistics such as seven interceptions and three interception returns for touchdowns over 30 games.
Pro Football Focus noted that DeJean did not allow a touchdown during coverage last season. He also excelled as a punt returner and was named Big Ten Return Man of the Year.
"I’m a football player," DeJean said when discussing his role on the field. "Whether it's inside, outside, at safety or whatever it is, this is a game I love to play."
In addition to being named Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year, he was a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award and earned several accolades throughout his college career.
Despite missing part of his senior season due to injury, DeJean affirmed his readiness: "Physically, I'm good. If there is a game played today, I'd be ready to go."
Director of Scouting Brandon Hunt commented on DeJean's explosive nature and versatility: "This guy can make plays on the ball from a number of spots on defense and he can make plays in the return game as well."
DeJean's speed was highlighted by reports of him running a 4.44-second 40-yard dash after recovering from injury. His defensive prowess is further underscored by statistics showing minimal explosive passes allowed during his coverage.
