Dan Chang, the head coach of Plymouth Whitemarsh High School, has established a reputation for success during his 15-year tenure. Early in his career, he was named Times Herald Coach of the Year for Football. Under his leadership, the school has won the Suburban One League title seven times, including the last three consecutive years.

As Plymouth Whitemarsh prepares to face Hatboro-Horsham Senior High School on Friday, Chang is on the brink of his 100th win as head coach. With 99 wins already, he is the second-winningest coach in the school's history. However, Chang emphasizes that his role extends beyond achieving victories on the field.

"I think the most important thing about my job of being a football coach is to help develop these boys that we get into young men," Chang said. "I believe that if we are focusing on building kids and showing them the right way to do things and the right way to act in life...the wins will follow."

Chang promotes a "we over me" mentality within his team and stresses accountability both on and off the field. He views his team as a family that can rely on each other through difficult times.

A few years ago, two members of the program lost close family members within a short period. During this challenging time, Chang emphasized unity and support within the team.

"It was very tough on our guys," Chang said. "I found that football and being together...and really reemphasizing that idea of family...kept each other going through that time."

Chang believes these experiences have strengthened his team and allowed them to continue winning games for meaningful reasons.

The culture Chang has instilled at Plymouth Whitemarsh focuses on responsibility and teamwork. His players are expected to be role models both in sports and academics.

"Football...is the ultimate team sport," Chang said. "We can't do the things that we want to do without everybody being on board."

Despite numerous successes, Chang credits his players for their hard work and commitment.

"I think our success is due to our kids," he said. "They come in all year, and they work their tails off."

Chang also acknowledges his coaching staff's contributions, many of whom have been with him for several years.

"I've got a great group of guys who are great with football but even more importantly...they're great with kids," he said.

Beyond football, Chang encourages community involvement among his players through volunteering and helping at local events.

"Not everything you do needs something coming back to you," he said. "Most of the time it's more about giving than what you are getting."

Reflecting on nearing 100 wins, Chang expressed pride in Plymouth Whitemarsh's overall environment.

"I just would like people to know how proud I am of our school district," he said. "One of my favorite things about coaching is seeing how many guys come back after they graduate."
