The Philadelphia Flyers Rookies secured a 3-2 victory against the New York Rangers Rookies in sudden death overtime at the PPC Center on Saturday, marking the return game of the 2024 Rookie Series. The two teams split the series, with New York winning via shootout on Friday evening.
Thirty-three seconds into overtime, Emil Andrae assisted Samu Tuomaala for the game-winning goal. The play began with Jett Luchanko passing the puck to second-season defenseman Andrae.
Defenseman Matteo Mann scored first with a power play goal, giving the Flyers a 1-0 lead by the end of the first period. Goaltender Sam Hillebrandt entered at the start of the second period after Carson Bjarnason saved all 14 shots he faced in the opening frame.
Sawyer Boulton extended Philadelphia's lead to 2-1 early in the second period during a 3-on-2 transitional play initiated by Zayde Wisdom. However, by the end of that period, Matthew Robertson's power play goal over Hillebrandt’s glove reduced New York's deficit to 2-1. Adam Edstrom then tied the score at 2-2 with a shorthanded breakaway goal during a Flyers five-minute power play.
The third period saw no additional goals, leading to another night of sudden death overtime where Philadelphia ultimately emerged victorious.
