Union II secured two points against Columbus Crew 2 in a shootout at Subaru Park, propelling them to the top of the table. Philadelphia Union now shares first place in the Eastern Conference with FC Cincinnati 2, both holding 43 points. Columbus Crew 2 is third with 40 points.
The match began slowly, but Cavan Sullivan, aged 14, energized the game with a remarkable goal from distance in the 29th minute. He capitalized on a rebound off a corner, sending the ball into the top left corner for a 1-0 lead for Philadelphia.
The intensity increased from there. Despite Union II leading at halftime, Brent Adu-Gyamfi equalized for Columbus in the 65th minute.
Philadelphia Union maintained their effort throughout the second half. Coach Marlon LeBlanc made five substitutions: Jamir Johnson, Gavin Wetzel, Diego Rocio, Carlos Rojas, and Giovanny Sequera all entered before regulation ended. However, the score remained tied, necessitating a shootout to determine the result.
In his first game after more than a month off, goalkeeper Andrew Rick allowed only one goal during the shootout. Columbus Crew 2’s keeper Stas Lapkes conceded two goals. The decisive shot was scored by Sullivan, securing an extra point for Union II. Consequently, Crew 2 departed Philadelphia with just one point while LeBlanc’s squad retained two points at home to tie for first place with FC Cincinnati 2.
