The journey to the NFL is challenging for undrafted free agents (UDFAs), who begin their careers at a disadvantage compared to drafted players. Despite this, success is achievable, as demonstrated by Eagles legend Jason Peters, a seven-time Pro Bowl and four-time All-Pro offensive tackle.

Players must be prepared for any outcome on draft night. "Obviously, coming from a small school and knowing that shot of getting drafted, it's kind of a small chance but you got to kind of flip your mindset and understand like where I'm at," said safety Reed Blankenship.

Blankenship, who went undrafted in 2022 from Middle Tennessee State, has since earned an extension with the Eagles. His work ethic was shaped by his high school experience hauling hay. "I was fortunate enough to be able to work on a farm... it just builds character," he explained.

Similarly, wide receiver/punt returner Britain Covey signed with the Eagles in 2022 after going undrafted out of Utah. Covey emphasized adaptability: "Part of making the team as an undrafted free agent is being willing to put your pride down about how you want to make the team."

Covey's approach paid off; in 2023, he led the NFL with 417 punt return yards. Bryce Huff also exemplifies perseverance. After starting his career with the Jets following a productive tenure at Memphis, Huff joined the Eagles with an underdog mentality.

"I mean, I had to work my way up to the field at every level," Huff noted. These players serve as role models for new UDFAs.

Blankenship strives to support newcomers: "When they first got here, I made sure to put myself in their shoes again." Covey shares this sentiment: "I talk to the UDFAs every day... The way you make the team oftentimes is by having a unique skill set."

Huff advises against complacency: "Don't get complacent and don't be satisfied with where you are." He remains driven by his goals despite securing a new deal.

These narratives underscore that while making it as a UDFA is arduous, determination and adaptability can lead to success in the NFL.
