With the results in Charlotte, Philadelphia Union secured its spot in the Leagues Cup Round of 32 on Wednesday night.
After starting off East 4 group action with a 1-0 victory over Charlotte FC on Saturday night behind a goal from Tai Baribo and stingy defense that didn't allow a single shot on target, the Union had their eyes focused on their previous opponent. Charlotte FC concluded their group play hosting Cruz Azul in the Mint City, and the Boys in Blue could secure their spot with either a win in regulation from the Liga MX side or advance at the final whistle before the penalty kick shootout.
In the end, it was a scoreless draw in regulation that proved to be decisive as the Union are through and will take on either Orlando City SC, CF Montreal, or San Luis from East 2.
The Union's position in their own group and their matchup will be confirmed when they conclude the Leagues Cup Group Stage on Sunday night by taking on Cruz Azul at Subaru Park. Kickoff is set for 8 PM with coverage on FS1, UniMas, and free on Apple TV.
