As the Philadelphia Eagles progress through their training camp, the linebacker position remains a focal point of interest. Despite the anticipation surrounding this group, it is essential to remember that no full-contact practices have taken place yet, with pads scheduled to go on starting Tuesday. The defensive scheme under Coordinator Vic Fangio continues to be implemented, emphasizing a learning phase for both coaches and players.

"I really like his scheme," said Zack Baun. "Like I said in the spring, a lot of similar things to what I did in college, and it protects guys in a lot of different areas and also allows a lot of guys to do a lot of different things and disguise coverage and you don't really know what we're doing."

Devin White echoed these sentiments: "I'm very confident that Coach will put us in the best positions. There is a lot of flexibility here and we're able to show what we can do."

The Eagles' first-team reps have been primarily rotated among Baun, White, and Nakobe Dean. Oren Burks, Brandon Smith, Ben VanSumeren, and rookie Jeremiah Trotter Jr. are also competing for roles.

Fran Duffy observed Monday's practice closely: Lane Johnson (toe) and Tyler Steen (ankle) were absent from practice. Fred Johnson filled in at right tackle while Mekhi Becton took over at right guard. During individual periods focusing on combo blocks, Jalen Carter penetrated the backfield early during team drills.

Saquon Barkley was not present due to personal reasons, allowing Will Shipley and Kenneth Gainwell to split first-team reps at running back. Both backs impressed during 7-on-7 action.

Injury updates include Barkley's absence for personal reasons along with injuries keeping Oren Burks (knee), Lane Johnson (toe), Tyler Steen (ankle), and Brett Toth (hamstring) out or limited.

Head Coach Nick Sirianni emphasized conditioning as vital: "One thing that's really important to us is that we play with relentless effort and great toughness... we've made a push there as far as doing some extra conditioning." Sirianni praised quarterback Jalen Hurts for his performance thus far: "I think he's looked really sharp... I'm really excited about him."

Defensive efforts were highlighted by standout performances from Josh Sweat who expects an improved season after career highs last year: "I know how I approach my offseason every year so I know I got better."

Landon Dickerson noted the team's self-driven emphasis on conditioning: "There's been an emphasis on not only summer conditioning coming back in the best shape... but also during practice where it's in between drives."

Nakobe Dean spoke positively about Vic Fangio’s straightforward coaching style: "He's old school... he just tells you straight up if he liked that if he didn't like it."

Zack Baun shared insights into his off-field adjustments becoming a new father while transitioning teams: "I'd be lying if I said it was completely smooth... but it's been a good transition for me."
