The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) will distribute about $15 million in funds to 32 municipalities spanning 20 counties, according to a Jan. 4 announcement by Gov. Tom Wolf.
The funds are through the Automated Red-Light Enforcement (ARLE) and will go toward 36 safety projects. The funds are made possible by fines from red light violations at 36 Philadelphia intersections.
“This program helps communities across the state make important investments in traffic flow and safety,” Wolf said. “These improvements complement the many road, bridge and multimodal projects happening in Pennsylvania.”
According to the release, projects for improving safety, enhancing mobility and reducing congestion were considered. There were 151 applications amounting to $46 million in requests. The projects were chosen by an eight-member committee with a focus on safety benefits, effectiveness, cost and impact locally and regionally.
In Philadelphia County, $7 million was approved for four programs in the city of Philadelphia. These included citywide intersection modifications, modern roundabouts, bike network curb separation and citywide traffic calming.
Projects in Delaware County include, Chester City receiving $115,831 to improve state Roads 291 and 322 off-ramp/Jeffrey Street traffic signal. This will convert the intersection from a flashing red/yellow configuration to a fully signalized intersection. Radnor Township receives $120,350 for a bridge height warning system at the SEPTA underpass on King of Prussia Road.
Yeadon Borough receives $287,000 for the MacDade Boulevard and Church Lane traffic signal and pedestrian accommodation improvements.
Since 2010 ARLE, has funded $127.79 million leading to 537 transportation enhancement projects.
