GREATER PHILADELPHIA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: Member Perspective: David Thornburgh

Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on July 15

How can the business community help to ensure election protection during a pandemic?

In this Year of the Voter, expanding access to vote-by-mail and promoting a culture of voting that increases citizen engagement and voter participation are critical steps toward a more healthy local democracy. Local governments, civic and business leaders, and community anchors all owe it to Pennsylvanians to do everything in their collective power to make sure our elections are accessible to everyone, and that citizens are both informed and ready to make their vote count. People should not have to choose between making their voices heard and keeping themselves and their families safe.

To reach the more than 8.5 million registered voters in Pennsylvania (2.8 million of whom are in the Greater Philadelphia region), the Committee of Seventy has launched a voter education and awareness campaign called WeVote. WeVote’s goal is to build a network of networks in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania to make sure that all voters get what they need to vote safely, securely, and knowledgeably in November. WeVote provides the content – a suite of online tools and resources, reminders about key election dates, nonpartisan information about candidates, offices, and issues – and WeVote partners provide the communication channels to their employees and members. More than 25 major employers – among them Brandywine Realty Trust, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Morgan Lewis, KYW, and the Free Library of Philadelphia – have already signed on as a WeVote partner.

A recent Harvard case study shows conclusively that employees, particularly young employees, want to work at a company or organization that encourages and supports active civic participation. Many companies have dedicated resources for corporate social responsibility projects aimed at strengthening society and building goodwill among employees, consumers, and the public. Voter participation initiatives like WeVote align with the goals of social responsibility projects, as they address a critical societal problem (lack of engagement), while building goodwill with key stakeholders.
