PHILADELPHIA -- Brandon Marsh, an outfielder for the Phillies, has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a right hamstring strain. The move, retroactive to Thursday, comes after Marsh's ongoing injury issues. Cal Stevenson has been recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to fill Marsh's spot on the active roster.
Phillies Manager Rob Thomson explained the team's decision, stating, "He wasn't getting worse, he just wasn't improving, and he can't run at 100%." Despite hopes that Marsh would avoid an IL placement, his inability to play since a fielding incident last Wednesday prompted the decision.
Marsh's absence was noted last week as he was sidelined from Monday's series opener against the Giants for struggling with his performance at the plate. Though he returned briefly, a bounce during a fielding play led to further complications.
Discussing the injury specifics, Thomson commented, "It's the back of the knee, and it runs up into the hamstring. As mild as it can be." Marsh will accompany the team on their road trip to New York and Chicago, where he will continue training until ready for a rehab assignment.
While Marsh recovers, Johan Rojas is expected to take over center field duties. Rojas had a challenging previous season but has shown promise this year. He is hitting .345 and added three stolen bases to his performance. “He's playing pretty good,” Thomson remarked, suggesting Rojas' continued presence in the lineup as long as he performs well.
Marsh's return timeline is indefinite, as the team monitors his running capability. For now, Rojas' form may provide the Phillies some offensive depth in Marsh's absence.
