The Philadelphia Eagles have consistently demonstrated success by maintaining a long-term strategic focus, while managing the current roster effectively. An example of this approach is Cam Jurgens, who was drafted in 2022 as part of a plan to eventually succeed Jason Kelce at the center position. Before taking over as center and earning Pro Bowl recognition last year, Jurgens excelled as a starter at right guard during the 2023 season.
Jurgens, like many before him, benefitted from mentorship within the team. This tradition of learning extends to other players such as Dallas Goedert, who learned alongside Zach Ertz, and Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter, who observed Fletcher Cox. Similarly, those in the defensive end/outside linebacker position groups have improved under the guidance of Brandon Graham.
The Philadelphia Eagles have successfully executed a succession plan that many teams strive for but seldom attain. Head Coach Nick Sirianni highlighted the significance of mentorship, stating, "To have the guy in there, whether it's Jason Kelce with Cam, or whether it's Fletch with Jalen Carter or Jordan Davis, whether it's BG with Nolan (Smith), to be able to watch that tape to show the standard of what something looks like..."
The current roster for 2025 maintains a blend of seasoned players and emerging talent. The younger players understand their role: to learn from veterans and eventually lead the team themselves. Brandon Graham emphasized this point by reflecting on the guidance he received early in his career, stating, "It meant a lot to me when players like T Cole (Eagles Hall of Fame defensive end Trent Cole) and those guys would help me." He now aims to provide similar support to younger teammates.
The team will soon focus on bolstering its roster further with the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft. The Eagles aim to bring in young talent and rely on experienced players to set an example and guide these new additions. Lane Johnson, an All-Pro right tackle, reinforced the importance of this culture, saying, "Help them become great players...it's only the right thing for me to help the young players here know what I know. The better they are, the better this football team is."
This philosophy has not only yielded a winning record but has also contributed to the Eagles securing two World Championships.
