The Philadelphia Eagles have announced the release of cornerback Darius "Big Play" Slay after five seasons with the team. The 34-year-old joined the Eagles in 2020 following a trade from the Detroit Lions, where he earned first-team All-Pro honors in 2017. Slay was originally drafted by Detroit in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft and spent seven years there.

During his time with the Eagles, Slay made three Pro Bowl appearances and contributed to Philadelphia's second Super Bowl victory. In the 2024 season, he played 14 games, recording 49 tackles, 13 pass defenses (PDs), a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery.

Slay's influence extended beyond his on-field performance as he played a mentorship role for younger players like rookie cornerbacks Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell. DeJean noted Slay's leadership: "He's helped me and Q... teaching us on the field... But he's just been a great leader to look up to." Mitchell added that Slay was "like a big brother," providing advice both on and off the field.

This past season, Slay achieved his goal of winning a Super Bowl ring. He recorded 12 tackles, five PDs, and an interception during the playoffs. Throughout Philadelphia's playoff run, he participated in 92 percent of snaps.

Despite being released, Slay intends to continue playing in the NFL. Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio commented on his enduring abilities: "He's like some good Italian red wine. Gets better with age."
