The Philadelphia Eagles have a unique approach to player development, led by Connor Barwin, who is in his fifth season with the team's front office. Barwin, a former Pro Bowl player, heads the Football Development and Strategy department. This team also includes Vice President of Football Operations Jeff Scott, Player Development Assistant/Scout Patrick McDowell, and Player Development Assistant Matt Leo.
Barwin's role focuses on players who do not see much action during games. He aims to provide these athletes with the same level of coaching and support as their more active teammates. "Our role in many ways is to focus on 25 guys who don't play every single week," said Barwin. "We want to make sure they're getting the same coaching, the same feedback, the same support that the 45 players that do play get."
The work involves collaboration across various departments within football operations and extends throughout the organization. The objective is to ensure all players are prepared for opportunities when they arise, regardless of how frequently they appear on the field.
One initiative led by Barwin's team is an onboarding weekend for rookies and their parents. This program provides education about playing in the NFL and specifically in Philadelphia. It offers insights into team structure and helps speed up newcomers' learning curves.
"Success for us is when guys get better," Barwin stated. "It is all about getting better as a player, being a great teammate, and learning how to help the team."
This year-round effort reflects a commitment to continuous improvement as rosters evolve throughout each season.
