Junior quarterback Liam O'Brien of the University of Pennsylvania football team has been recognized for his outstanding performance in Saturday's 67-49 victory against Cornell. He received the FCS National Offensive Player of the Week award from Stats Perform and was named Ivy League co-Offensive Player of the Week.
In only his second career start, O'Brien set program records with six passing touchdowns and seven total touchdowns responsible for in a single game. These records had not been surpassed in over twenty years. Previously, Mike Mitchell held the record for passing touchdowns with five scores against Cornell in 2003, while Jim Finn accounted for six total touchdowns in a 1998 game against Brown.
O'Brien shares the Ivy honor with Yale quarterback Grant Jordan, who achieved similar statistics during Yale's win over Brown on Saturday. Jordan recorded six passing touchdowns for 372 yards and rushed ten times for 21 yards, adding another touchdown on the ground.
Jared Richardson caught three of O'Brien's touchdown passes, making him the first wide receiver in program history to have two games with three or more touchdown receptions. Both Richardson and running back Malachi Hosley were included in the Ivy League's weekly honor roll. Hosley ran for 192 yards and scored two touchdowns against Cornell.
Since stepping into his role as starting quarterback, O'Brien has thrown eight touchdown passes with only one interception across two games. He has accumulated 588 passing yards and rushed for an additional 137 yards with two rushing touchdowns.
The Penn football team currently holds a record of 4-4 overall and is 2-3 within their conference. They are scheduled to play their final home game of the season against Harvard on Saturday at Homecoming, beginning at 1 p.m., where they will also honor their graduating seniors before kickoff.
