Surge in thefts from person: 8 incidents reported in Philadelphia in week ending Oct. 27

Philadelphia police handled eight thefts from person in the week ending Oct. 27, 2024, according to the Philadelphia Police Department.

This represents a 166.7% increase from the prior week, which saw three thefts from person.

So far this year, the city has reported a total of 306 thefts from person.

Notably, the week ending Jan. 14 marked the highest incidence of thefts from person this year, with 14 cases, underscoring the need for heightened vigilance and community cooperation.

Philadelphia grappled with a staggering surge in property crimes in 2023. According to the annual Pew Charitable Trusts report, the city registered more than 78,000 property crimes, which pushed the total number of major crimes (violent and property combined) to a 20-year high of 93,009.

In contrast, violent crimes, encompassing assault, robbery, and homicide, saw a significant decline in 2023, reaching their lowest level in a decade.
