In mid-April, Jalen Hurts is already focused on the upcoming NFL season, even though training camp is still three months away and the season opener in Brazil is 140 days out. Fresh from his third consecutive playoff appearance and back-to-back Pro Bowl selections, Hurts emphasizes the importance of laying a strong foundation early.
"I think the actionable things on the field are so important because that's where you develop that chemistry," said Hurts during a media session on Wednesday. "We have a ton of opportunity in front of us, but I think the number one, most important thing is the mentality that people have in the building."
As he enters his fourth season as a starter at age 25, Hurts acknowledges he has much to learn. He welcomes this challenge with enthusiasm, particularly with new coaching staff members like Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore joining him. "I'm excited to work with him. I know they (Moore and the staff) have a history of doing really good things," Hurts remarked.
Hurts has been present at the facility throughout the offseason and has witnessed several changes within the team. The retirements of franchise legends Fletcher Cox and Jason Kelce highlight these changes. While acknowledging their irreplaceability, Hurts looks forward to seeing other players from programs such as Alabama, Georgia, and Oklahoma step up.
"I think we got special guys here," he stated. "I think we're going to get guys that have that sense of culture and mentality about themselves and others truly hungry to go out there and do great things."
Ultimately, for Hurts, "the work comes first." He expressed his desire to maintain high standards consistently: "I have a standard I want to play to and I want to play to that all the time."
