Everything has changed for Tyler Steen as he enters his second year with the Philadelphia Eagles. After playing 71 offensive snaps and starting once as a rookie, Steen is now familiar with the pace of an NFL season. His daily interactions with Run Game Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach Jeff Stoutland have also given him insight into what is expected on the field.
Steen is focused on securing a starting position at right guard. "I'm a lot further mentally and physically," Steen stated. He added that his experience last year helped him adapt to playing guard, which was new to him. "I know I've got to earn it every day," he emphasized.
Originally a starting offensive tackle at Vanderbilt and Alabama, the 6-foot-6, 321-pound Steen transitioned to guard after being drafted by the Eagles in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft (65th overall). He noted that adjusting to the different perspective required at guard was challenging but manageable over time. "You're inside and it's a different view than when you play at tackle," he explained.
With Jason Kelce retired and Cam Jurgens moving from right guard to center, there is an opportunity for Steen to claim the starting right guard spot. The Eagles have had notable players in this position before, such as Brandon Brooks and Isaac Seumalo. However, competition remains strong as they prepare for the upcoming season.
"At guard you've got to be a bigger, wider dude," said Steen, referring to facing interior defensive linemen rather than edge pass rushers typical for tackles. Despite these differences, he believes that focusing on specific training will help him succeed in this role.
