In a strategic move following the NFL Draft weekend, the Philadelphia Eagles have signed offensive lineman Mekhi Becton to a one-year contract. The announcement was made on Monday by Executive Vice President/General Manager Howie Roseman. This decision aims to enhance the team's depth and experience at the offensive tackle positions.
Becton, originally drafted by the New York Jets in 2020 as their first-round pick (11th overall), stands at 6-7 and weighs 364 pounds. His career began promisingly with the Jets, starting 13 of his first 14 games at left tackle and participating in 81 percent of their offensive plays. However, his progress was hampered by injuries. A knee injury in Week 1 of his second season ended his year prematurely, followed by another preseason injury that led to another lost season.
Last year, Becton returned to start 16 games for the Jets at left tackle, playing in 95 percent of their offensive snaps. Despite an inconsistent performance alongside the Jets' offense, he awaited an opportunity to join a new team for the upcoming season.
The Eagles had selected two interior offensive linemen during the draft but did not address their need for tackles. "It's just how the board fell," Roseman explained on Saturday regarding their draft strategy. He emphasized that it was more important to adhere to their draft board rather than reach for players out of necessity.
With Becton's addition, Run Game Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach Jeff Stoutland gains a player with significant experience—883 of his 984 career snaps were played at left tackle across 31 games with 30 starts. This signing reflects Roseman's adaptability and strategic planning as they enter Phase 2 of this offseason.
