The Philadelphia Eagles have announced the re-signing of cornerback Avonte Maddox to a one-year contract. Maddox, who was released by the team on March 7, has been with the Eagles for six years and is returning to the team that drafted him.
Maddox's career with the Eagles includes 245 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 31 pass deflections, four interceptions, three sacks, eight forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery in 64 games, with 38 starts. Drafted in the fourth round from the University of Pittsburgh, he has also participated in seven playoff games.
In recent seasons, Maddox has faced injuries. A foot injury affected his performance during the Eagles' 2022 Super Bowl LVII appearance against Kansas City. In 2023, he suffered a pectoral muscle tear in Week 2 but returned for the final regular-season game and postseason play. That year, he recorded 12 tackles, two passes defensed, and a forced fumble during the regular season. His efforts earned him recognition from his teammates as they awarded him the Ed Block Courage Award for perseverance and dedication.
The Eagles are looking forward to increased competition in their secondary with Maddox's return. The team also added cornerback Tyler Hall and sees Zech McPhearson returning from an Achilles injury. Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson will join starting corners Darius Slay and James Bradberry along with safety Reed Blankenship.
The Eagles are eager to witness progress from younger players such as cornerbacks Kelee Ringo and Eli Ricks and safety Sydney Brown, who is recovering from an ACL injury sustained in Week 18 of last season.
