Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean have quickly become key players in the Philadelphia Eagles' defense. The rookies, drafted in April, are already making significant contributions to Vic Fangio's defensive strategies. Mitchell, the Eagles' first-round pick, has been a starter for five games this season. In the recent 20-16 victory over the Cleveland Browns, he played all 57 defensive snaps, contributing three tackles and helping limit the opposing team's passing yards.
DeJean, chosen as the team's second draft pick, took on the role of starting nickel corner against the Browns. He played 52 snaps, recording six tackles and assisting in a quarterback sack during effective edge blitzes. Both rookies allowed just three completions for 23 yards without conceding any first downs.
The Eagles have strengthened their secondary through recent drafts and strategic acquisitions. Executive Vice President/General Manager Howie Roseman has been instrumental in addressing the cornerback position by adding players like Kelee Ringo and Eli Ricks. The team also signed Isaiah Rodgers after his suspension and welcomed back Avonte Maddox from free agency.
DeJean expressed his readiness for NFL challenges despite missing training camp due to a hamstring injury. "I felt prepared," he stated about his performance against Cleveland. He has also taken over punt return duties since Britain Covey's injury, averaging 12.8 yards per return on Sunday.
Mitchell shared his approach to playing in the NFL: "I look at every receiver as a great player... it's my job to be prepared and play my best football." Both rookies have demonstrated professionalism and determination early in their careers.
DeJean emphasized his focus on fulfilling his responsibilities on defense: "When I'm on defense, I've got to lock in and focus on my job." His eagerness to impact games positively reflects his commitment to contributing effectively to the team.
With veterans like Darius Slay and James Bradberry already established as starters, Mitchell and DeJean are proving themselves valuable additions to an evolving Eagles secondary.
