The Eagles are saddened to announce the passing of former running back Lee Bouggess, who died at 76 on July 4, 2024, at Allegria at the Fountains in Atco, NJ.
Born in Louisville, KY on January 18, 1948, Bouggess resided in Cherry Hill and Sicklerville, NJ with his wife Barbara for nearly four decades. He graduated from Shawnee High School in 1966 and the University of Louisville in Kentucky in 1970. During his time at the university, he was inducted into the UL Athletic Hall of Fame. Bouggess earned a degree in recreation and was selected by the Eagles as the 59th overall pick in the third round of the 1970 NFL Draft.
Bouggess played for the Eagles from 1970 to 1973, participating in 32 games. He rushed for a total of 697 yards and scored two touchdowns before concluding his football career with the New York Stars in the World Football League.
After retiring from professional football, Bouggess worked various construction jobs and dedicated significant time to mentoring children through his involvement with the Camden Police Athletic League. He also served as Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation in Gloucester County until his retirement.
He is survived by his two children, Tonya Eady and Darin Bouggess; his sister Jamesella (Bouggess) Jackson; grandchildren Marshall Rountree, Madison Bouggess, Zachary Bouggess, and Lee Bouggess; and three great-grandchildren. His wife Barbara (Buchanan) Bouggess predeceased him along with siblings Jerry, Terry, Billy, and parents Silas Albert and Pauline Alice (Davis) Bouggess.
