Philadelphia Union triumphed over FC Cincinnati in a high-scoring match on Tuesday night, securing a 4-2 victory to advance to the Leagues Cup Quarterfinals. Tai Baribo led the charge with two goals, marking his fourth multi-goal performance of the season.
The first half ended scoreless, but the game transformed into an offensive spectacle in the second half. Mikael Uhre opened the scoring six minutes after halftime with a counter-attacking finish set up by Daniel Gazdag. Ten minutes later, Baribo scored his first goal of the evening, extending Philadelphia's lead to 2-0.
FC Cincinnati responded with resilience, tying the game at 2-2 by the 80th minute. However, Baribo quickly restored Philadelphia's lead just a minute later with a cross from Quinn Sullivan. Sullivan then added an insurance goal in the 84th minute, converting his own rebound to finalize the score at 4-2.
Philadelphia Union's victory ensures their place in the Leagues Cup Quarterfinals at Subaru Park on Saturday, August 17th. Tickets for this match are currently available for purchase.
Head Coach Jim Curtin fielded a full-strength squad for this decisive encounter against his former assistant coach’s team. The starting lineup included Andre Blake as goalkeeper and defenders Kai Wagner, Jack Elliott, Jakob Glesnes, and Olivier Mbaizo. The midfield featured Jose Martinez, Alejandro Bedoya, and Jack McGlynn alongside Daniel Gazdag. Up front were Mikael Uhre and Tai Baribo.
Despite an early disallowed goal due to offside and multiple attacking attempts from both teams in the first half, neither side could break through until Uhre's opener early in the second half. Following Baribo's initial goal that made it 2-0 for Philadelphia Union, FC Cincinnati managed to level with goals from Pavel Bucha and Deandre Yedlin.
Curtin’s substitutions proved crucial as Sam Adeniran replaced Uhre and Quinn Sullivan came on for Bedoya late in the game. These changes paid off when Sullivan assisted Baribo’s second goal before scoring himself shortly thereafter.
The Union now await their next opponent which will be determined by tonight’s Round of 16 clash between Cruz Azul and Mazatlán FC.
