The City of Philadelphia is joining cities across the nation in honoring June as Gun Violence Awareness Month.

What is Gun Violence Awareness Month?

Established in 2015, Gun Violence Awareness Month is acknowledged annually by cities, towns, and communities nationwide. Launched on the first Friday of every June, this year the month is commemorated on June 2.

June 2 is also the birthday of Hadiya Pendleton, a victim of gun violence, who the date honors. Also known as Wear Orange Day, Philadelphians should don orange gear to honor survivors and victims of gun violence nationwide.

As of 2021, the year with the most complete data on the subject, 48,830 people died from gun-related injuries in the US, a 23 percent increase since 2019. In 2022, the City of Philadelphia recorded 516 homicides. While still unacceptably high, this number represents an 8 percent drop in homicides from 2021, and we plan to continue to implement our violence prevention efforts to continue to reduce homicides in Philadelphia.

How can I get involved?

Philadelphians who want to contribute to this continued decrease in violent crime in our city and get involved can join us for one of our many community events throughout June and beyond, as well as check out events being hosted by our community partners.

Wear Orange Day is the official start of National Gun Violence Awareness Month. Created to honor Hadiya Pendleton, and all survivors and victims of gun violence nationwide, Philadelphians are encouraged to wear orange on this day to express their awareness of and concern with gun violence in the United States.
