Philadelphia-based Consumer Staples company Rite Aid Corp. (RAD:NYQ) sees value fall 69.1% in week ending Oct. 8

Value in Consumer Staples stocks rose 3.1 percent in the week ending Oct. 8 from the previous week.

The strongest performing Consumer Staples company in Pennsylvania was Hershey Co. (HSY:NYQ), sitting 22.6 percent higher to sell at $220.52.

Weis Markets Inc. (WMK:NYQ) fared the worst among Pennsylvania companies, suffering a 78.6 percent drop to $72.4.

Among Philadelphia companies, Rite Aid Corp. (RAD:NYQ) saw the biggest fall in value of 69.1 percent in the week ending Oct. 8.

The Energy sector was the week’s best-performing sector on the market. The market is divided into 11 different sectors.

Real Estate was the worst-performing sector.

Healthcare and technology stocks are viewed as the safest bets for long-term gains.

Besty Kuekcer with Benzinga.com said healthcare-related stocks, such as hospital conglomerates and insurance companies, have weathered numerous economic crises and still make a profit, suggesting that they are generally a stable investment.

While technology stocks can be more risky, given the boom-bust nature of new tech companies, Kuecker recommended a diverse portfolio of tech companies to strike it big when companies succeed or sell to other larger companies.

For short-term investments, Kuecker recommended “consumer discretionary” stocks, which are sensitive to economic changes but can rise greatly on the back of a strong economy.
