University of the Sciences in Philadelphia issued the following announcement on Jan. 10.
Sigma Psi Zeta is a national sorority and one of eleven Greek Life organizations at USciences. Chapter President Kate Villarama PharmD’23, shared about Sigma Psi Zeta’s mission and members.
Describe Sigma Psi Zeta- what is the purpose or mission?
Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority, Inc. is a progressive, multicultural Greek Organization that provides a means to success and support for womxn, particularly womxn of color. The sorority builds on the unity of strong and independent leaders to affect change in our organization, our campuses, and our local communities.
We aim to be a community of pioneers and innovators offering opportunities for womxn to develop professional and interpersonal skills in service of education, cultural awareness, and our national philanthropy.
Why should people join?
People should join this organization because we have become a sorority that celebrates the foundational things we have in common, as well as our unique cultural backgrounds and individual experiences.
The activities in which we participate increase our awareness of the multitude of cultures that have contributed to our history. Our philanthropic activities increase our understanding of the timeless struggles faced by womxn of color everywhere.
Why did you join Sigma Psi Zeta?
I joined this organization because I wanted to put myself out there, get more involved, and meet new people. I saw one of my really good friends join before me, and I fell in love with how much more confident she became. I wanted the same experience for myself. In passion, I joined mostly because of the philanthropy, which is to combat violence against womxn. The philanthropy is extremely powerful and deserves much more awareness, which is what I hoped to spread after joining.
What are Sigma Psi Zeta members like?
Our sorority believes in the potential of all current and prospective members. We believe the womxn of this organization can and will achieve great things. We do not require any womxn to fit any bold. Rather, we recognize our differences are what enhance and enrich our sisterhood.
We do not seek the “perfect sxster” as we cannot and have not tried to define her. Our sxsters define themselves through their personal stories and the ways their unique contributions elevate our sorority. Our organization celebrated individuality of thought in all the womxn who wear our letters.
What kind of events do you participate in throughout the year?
Throughout the year we participate in events pertaining to our philanthropy, which is to combat violence against womxn. For instance, my favorite event is COMBAT, which is a spring semester step, stroll, and dance competition. At this event, we have our school’s and other school’s multicultural Greek Organizations and dance clubs compete. A percentage of the proceeds get donated to an organization that supports our philanthropy.
