University of Pennsylvania Law School issued the following announcement on Dec. 20.

Knoll, who is also Co-Director of the Center for Tax Law and Policy, focuses his work at the intersection of business and law.

Theodore K. Warner Professor of Law & Professor of Real Estate Michael Knoll is among the newest elected members to the American Law Institute (ALI).

“Professor Knoll’s dedication to creating a more equitable tax system is unparalleled, and his election to the ALI is a well-deserved honor for him,” said Theodore Ruger, Dean and Bernard G. Segal Professor of Law. “His incisive scholarship on how income tax laws affect business and investment decisions is a reflection of ALI’s mission to modernize, clarify, and improve the law.”

In its commitment to improve and modernize U.S. law, the ALI seeks members who demonstrate both excellence and innovation. For nearly 100 years, ALI members have produced academic research that continues to push our legal systems forward into the modern era. With his membership in this prestigious and historic organization, Knoll joins over two dozen University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School colleagues.

Knoll’s scholarly interests exist within the intersections between business and law. Most recently, his work focuses on the application of finance principles to questions of international tax policy, especially the connection between taxation and competitiveness.

In addition to his teaching position at the Law School, Knoll co-directs the Center for Tax Law and Policy, where he collaborates with students and other faculty members to produce pathbreaking and influential research.

Knoll holds a joint appointment at Wharton.
