University of Pennsylvania Law School issued the following announcement on Dec. 10.
Hoffman specializes in contract law, Klick in law and economics, and Roosevelt in constitutional law and conflict of laws.
The University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School is pleased to announce new chaired professorships for three members of our esteemed faculty.
David A. Hoffman
David A. Hoffman, William A. Schnader Professor of Law
David A. Hoffman is the William A. Schnader Professor of Law.
Also Deputy Dean, Hoffman is a widely-cited scholar whose interdisciplinary body of work focuses on contract law. He has written on a number of cutting-edge topics within the field, including the legal and technical aspects of blockchain transactions, how individuals experience contracting online, what extra-legal goals firms might seek to accomplish using the “terms and conditions.”
Hoffman has also engaged in the national conversation sparked by the #metoo movement, collaborating with a Law School student to publish a paper that argues that nondisclosure clauses in employment contracts violate public policy – a contractual doctrine his work continues to explore.
Most recently, Hoffman and colleague Anton Strezhnev of NYU conducted the largest ever study of residential leases. In “Leases as Forms,” Hoffman and Strezhnev present their dual findings that the incidence of illegal, unenforceable terms in residential leases have increased sharply over the last 20 years and that factors such as geography and race do affect the kinds of terms tenants face.
Hoffman earned his JD from Harvard Law and a BA in archeology and history from Yale. He joined the Law School faculty in 2017 and in 2018 was honored with the Harvey Levin teaching award.
Jonathan Klick

Jonathan Klick is the Charles A. Heimbold, Jr. Professor of Law.
Klick’s work focuses on identifying the causal effects of laws and regulations on individual behavior using cutting-edge econometric tools.
Specific topics addressed by Klick’s work include the relationship between abortion access and risky sex, the health behaviors of diabetics, the effect of police on crime, addiction as rational choice, and how liability exposure affects the labor market for physicians.
He has published work in both peer-reviewed economic and journals and law reviews, including Stanford Law Review, Columbia Law Review, University of Chicago Law Review, Journal of Economic Perspectives, Journal of Law & Economics, Journal of Law, Economics, and Organization, and Journal of Legal Studies.
Klick earned his JD from George Mason University, from which he also holds a PhD in Economics. He also has a BS from Villanova University and an MS from the University of Maryland.
Kermit Roosevelt
Kermit Roosevelt, David Berger Professor for the Administration of Justice
Kermit Roosevelt is the David Berger Professor for the Administration of Justice.
Roosevelt has published scholarly books on both constitutional law and conflict of laws, entitled The Myth of Judicial Activism: Making Sense of Supreme Court Decisions (Yale, 2006) and Conflict of Laws (Foundation Press, 2010).
His research has also been published in a number of journals, including the Virginia Law Review, Michigan Law Review, and Columbia Law Review.
In April of 2021, President Biden appointed Roosevelt to the Presidential Commission on the Supreme Court of the United States.
He is also the author of two fiction novels, In the Shadow of the Law (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2005) and Allegiance (Regan Arts, 2015).
Roosevelt earned his JD from Yale Law and holds an AB from Harvard.
