University of the Sciences in Philadelphia issued the following announcement on Oct. 15.

USciences Online is teaming up with Labster, an interactive simulated laboratory tool, to enhance its online offerings to students. The virtual lab environments give students an opportunity to participate in a virtual experiment and explore different concepts.

Currently, there are two Labster simulations in the Genomics 701 course, with more being planned for other courses. The hope is that students will learn techniques and protocols to reinforce underlying theory and concepts that are taught in the regular coursework. If successful, these simulations will provide enhanced knowledge retention and outcomes and will positively impact the students’ overall learning experience.

The first simulation for Genomics includes learning how to sequence DNA and screen for genes that might be overexpressed. The students see how state-of-the-art equipment is used in techniques such as Next Generation Sequencing and qPCR.  Students are required to perform the techniques necessary to “complete” the experiment before taking a quiz or assessment based on the work.

Labster bases its simulations on mathematical algorithms that support open-ended investigations combined with gamification and storytelling to stimulate students’ curiosity.
