The University of Pennsylvania has appointed Timmy Brownell as assistant coach for its men’s squash team for the 2025-26 season. Brownell, who is currently ranked No. 32 in the United States and is the founder of the National Squash League, brings a strong playing background to his new role.
At age 27, Brownell has achieved significant success in squash. He won U.S. National Championships in both 2022 and 2025, was twice named a National Champion and All-American at Harvard University, and claimed three Professional Squash Association titles during his career.
This marks Brownell’s first official coaching position. He expressed enthusiasm about joining Penn: “Beyond excited to spend more time with the phenomenal team they have built at the University of Pennsylvania. These men and women bring joy for the game to the courts every day and it’s so easy to feed off that energy to improve the collective. I can’t say enough good things about this group and I’m looking forward to seeing them compete at their best and develop as both players and young adults this season,” said Brownell.
Penn head coach Gilly Lane commented on the addition: “We’re incredibly excited to welcome a player like Timmy onto the coaching staff, he brings not only a great professional squash resume but also an outstanding playing career at Harvard. We look forward to him working with the program this upcoming season.”
Brownell’s appointment aims to strengthen one of college squash’s leading programs.
