Bert Bell died on October 11, 1959
Bert Bell died of a heart attack on October 11, 1959, after collapsing in the stands at Franklin Field during an NFL game in Philadelphia. He was a significant figure in the development of professional football. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Bell played quarterback at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1933, he co-founded the Philadelphia Eagles and served as co-owner and head coach. He became commissioner of the National Football League in 1946. Bell is known for creating the NFL Draft in 1936 to support competitive balance. He helped implement television policies and measures to protect the integrity of the game. Bell guided the league through financial and organizational challenges. His leadership helped shape the NFL’s structure. He served as commissioner until his death. Bell is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Philadelphia, maintaining his strong connection to the city throughout his life and career.
