This week in City of Philadelphia history.

Herbert Adderley died on October 30, 2020

Herbert Adderley, born in Philadelphia on June 8, 1939, died on October 30, 2020. He played 12 seasons in the NFL as a cornerback for the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys. He appeared in four of the first six Super Bowls and won six championships. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980. Adderley played college football at Michigan State, where he was an offensive standout. He later became known for his defense, recording 48 interceptions and over 1,000 return yards. He was a five-time All-Pro and a Pro Bowl selection for five consecutive years. In high school at Northeast High in Philadelphia, he earned All-City honors in four sports. He later joined the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame. Though he ended his career in Dallas, he identified as a Packer. His connection to Philadelphia remained strong through his early life, athletic beginnings, and local recognition.
