Temple University announced on Apr. 3 that its #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship has enabled international students Ayna Mammedova and Flavia Astete Garcia to pursue their studies in the United States and launch careers at leading organizations. The $20,000 renewable scholarship is awarded annually to two first-year international students who propose projects to bridge cultures and enhance intercultural understanding at Temple.
The initiative highlights efforts by U.S. universities to attract talented students from abroad, providing opportunities for academic growth and professional advancement. For many, scholarships like this one can make studying in the U.S. attainable despite geographic or financial barriers.
Mammedova, originally from Turkmenistan, is now an associate bioinformatics scientist at the Coriell Institute for Medical Research where she analyzes biological data related to cancer research. Garcia, from Peru, works in marketing at SAP managing business-to-business campaigns and contributing to cross-functional projects.
“The #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship provided a strong foundation and really changed my life,” Garcia said. “It gave me a clear path, encouraging me to stay focused, grow academically and as a leader while inspiring me to pursue competitive opportunities in tech and corporate spaces as a Latina woman.” She added: “As part of the program, we are encouraged to serve as leaders and get involved in the community, which is something I love.”
Mammedova credited support from Temple’s staff with helping her adjust during her first weeks on campus: “I was quite shy back then, but Leah and Marena were a big part of helping me integrate into the Temple community,” she said. “With their support, I got involved in organizing campus events including that year’s Temple Global Gala.”
Both graduates highlighted how faculty mentorship played an important role in their development. Garcia pointed out that Professor Alan Kerzner inspired her approach toward entrepreneurship: “Being in his classroom helped me understand how to set up a business and how to be a leader.” Mammedova also praised professors Vladi Wilent, Carol Manhart, and Martha Constantinou for making complex scientific concepts accessible.
